Club Activity
Tour of SkyeIn
May 2008, two members of the club travelled all the way up to Skye to meet with
players from the Isle of Skye Go Club. A series of games were played
informally over four nights, in the upstairs lounge bar of the
Caledonian
Hotel, Portree (much to the bemusement of the hotel's staff and
customers).
A great time was had by all, and both clubs look forward to return fixtures in the future. See the
Gallery page for pictures.
Scottish Open Go Tournament
This event was held again in the city of Dundee at the end of May 2008, and was attended by club members Alan, Paul & Donald. Alan's record over the two days was a dismal "Played 6 Won 0 Lost 6" (ouch) but Paul & Donald fared rather better, with Paul claiming one of the prizes of BGA bookshop vouchers. Everyone who took part got a pot of Dundee's finest marmalade to take away. Overall results can be seen on the
BGA website. See the
Gallery page for pictures.
BGA Shodan ChallengeBoth Alan & Jeannie are taking part in the 08/09 Challenge. For those of you who don't know what the Challenge entails, basically it involves setting yourself a target of raising your rating by AT LEAST three kyu (preferably more). You need to put in a fair bit of study, but you get also help in this from a mentor assigned to you by the Challenge's organisers. Colin Maclellan from the Twickenham club has kindly agreed to take on Alan & Jeannie as his "mentees".
Scottish Bar-Low Tournament
The Bar-Low was again held in the Quaker Meeting Rooms, Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh. 35 kyu-rated players took part, including Alan, Jeannie & Donald. Donald secured 2 wins from his four games, Alan finally managed his first ever tournament win, for 1 out of 4, but sadly Jeannie didn't get any wins (though she did pretty well all the same). See the
Gallery page for pictures, and the
BGA website for game results.
Fife Tournament
As on previous occasions, this was held at the Age Concern Meeting Room in Cupar, Fife. The only member attending was Alan, entering at 23 kyu. Alan won his first two games, against Matthew Taylor (Durham) and Simon Isobe (St. Andrews), then lost narrowly to Cedric Gautier (Dundee), before notching up his third and final win of the day, against Aidan Karley from Aberdeen. For his efforts, Alan received a prize of a packet of shortbread - plus a further packet for doing most of the washing up! See the Gallery page for pictures, and the BGA website for game results.
Skye II: The Sequel
Alan and Jeannie made a return visit to Skye from May 10th - 14th. The weather was if anything better than it had been during the 2008 trip, surely a miracle for Skye. They met up again with John & Carel for several informal games, both at last year's venue (Caledonian Hotel, Portree) and at the Edinbane Hotel. John & Carel mentioned they were planning to come down for the Open, arriving the evening before for the Lightning small board competition.
Forthcoming EventsThe Scottish Open is set for the 30th and 31st of May 2009, same venue as last year.
